The best websites I know have not only great navigation and outstanding content; they take things a step further by adding a few flourishes to their site here and there. In the next four posts or so I will show you how to add video, slideshows , weather forecasts and even driving directions to your web pages… at no cost!
The first of this series of posts looks at embedding video to your site. Video is a great way of bringing things to life. If you have a great report that relates to your industry how about interviewing key players of that report? If you have a fantastic customer service team how about a short video about them? You are really only limited by your imagination so have fun with it!
Embedding a YouTube video
- Prepare your video for uploading. YouTube will accept formats such as MPG, AVI, MOV. For optimum results you will need an MPEG4 format such as AVCHD. Use a free video encoder such as Any Video Converter which you can find at www.any-video-converter.com to help you convert your video into any of these best practice formats. Make sure your resolution matches your source video because YouTube can support up to 1080p. You are limited to around 15 minutes playtime although this does depend on the type of account you have.
- If you don't already have one, you will need to open a YouTube account which is completely free. Simply visit www.youtube.com and register on their very user-friendly interface. Locvate teh video Upload button and click on it. You will need to add a title, description and appropriate tags to make sure your video gets found by the great YouTube public. Nowq, click on the 'Upload a video…' button and select your chosen file. This will take a little while simply because the speed on your broadband connection's upload will be slower than the download speed; for this reason keep your file size compact, ideallly below around 50MB.
- Once your video has been uploaded and processed by YouTube, you can now embed it into your webpage/site. You will first be told by YouTUbe that your upload is complete. Then you will see a box below containing some code. Copy and past this code into the HTML view of the page where you want the video to appear and then view the page to check it's there.
- Result! Your website visitors should now be able to see the video on the page and press the large play button which appears overlaid on the video to play it- and be mesmerised by your outstanding content!
