I was recently asked  by a newbie WordPress user to recommend my 'must have' plugins.  There are very many plugins which are pretty good, but as a minimum here are my three recommendations:

This is a great way of protecting your  WordPress blog from spam. Spam can really bring down your website's  PageRank- an important mark  of your credibility online and something that  takes any months of hard work to achieve- so it is really important to do everything you can to eliminate spam. Akismet  simply needs to be activated on your WordPress blog, and you can thenceforth leave it to do its work.

2. All in one SEO pack

This plugin automatically optimises your  WordPress blog for the search engines. (Another good one is SEOpressor). The All in one SEO is the  only plugin to provide SEO integration for WP e-commerce sites at the time of writing this, it automatically optimises your titles for search engines,  generates META tags automatically , you can override any title and you can set any META keywords you want. For beginners, you don't even need to look at the options, it works out-of-the-box. Simply install.

3. Google XML Sitemaps

This plugin will generate a special XML sitemap which will help major search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo to index your blog. This makes it easier for the crawlers to see the complete structure of your site and retrieve the information on it more efficiently.

Google XML sitemaps  plugin supports all kinds of WordPress generated pages as well as custom URLs.It also notifies all major search engines each time you post about new content.
